Broadcasting companies are responsible for rating all the programmes, series and films they air. The rating should be depicted at the beginning of a production.
News and live shows
There are no Kijkwijzer ratings for live shows or the news, since these cannot be watched and rated in advance. The creators do have to take their broadcast time into account, and warn viewers if there's any shocking content.
Broadcast times
On Dutch television, the Kijkwijzer age ratings are linked to broadcast times:
- Productions rated all ages, 6 and 9 may be broadcast at any time of day
- Productions rated 12, 14 and 16 may only be broadcast from 20:00 hours until 06:00 in the morning
- Productions rated 18 may only be aired after midnight
Promos
Promos (short announcements or previews of a production) may be assessed by the broadcasters to determine at what times of the day they may be aired. Promos must depict the Kijkwijzer rating for the show or film from which they are derived. The broadcast times mentioned above also apply to promos.
Commercials
Commercials in which feature films are advertised, must also be rated using Kijkwijzer. This way, it can be determined at what time of day the commercial may be shown. The commercial itself will show the Kijkwijzer rating of the main product (i.e. the film or the DVD).
