You Rate It wins Comenius Siegel
Hilversum, 9 July 2014
NICAM and the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) have been awarded a Comenius EduMedia Seal of Approval for You Rate It, an international initiative for the classification of User Generated Content (online amateur videos).
You Rate It was developed at the request of the CEO Coalition, an initiative by Neelie Kroes aimed at making the internet safer for children.
You Rate It is a simple online questionnaire that can be completed by everyone who has seen a video online. This tool generates an age category and content classification which can then be customised for all of the countries in Europe. National sensibilities are taken into account in doing so. The tool can be adjusted to seamlessly fit the lay-out of every platform wishing to make use of it.
At present, a pilot project is underway at Italian media regulator Mediaset. At the 16mm.it platform, users – and shortly also uploaders – will soon be able to classify their films themselves using You Rate It, thereby informing others of the content.
The Comenius EduMedia award is presented by the Society for Pedagogy and Information (GPI), a non-profit organisation rooted in scientific research into multimedia, educational technology and media didactics. The European awards are presented to exceptional initiatives in the area of educational media supported by ICT. The award is supported by the European Commission: Life Long Learning programme.
